It’s quite simple for France at this late stage of the league season: win out, and Friendlies is yours. France enters Sunday’s match with England level with rival England atop the standings, but England have one less match played and control their own destiny.

But to win the league, they can’t afford to slip up, and this match is the toughest remaining one the team has this campaign. Can England and company continue their strong form at home, or will they be looking ahead and resting players with two more league matches and the Friendlies to come?

South Africa will be odds-on favourites when they take on Sri Lanka in the first match for both teams in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. The AB de Villiers-led side has been in England for a while, where they played a three-match series with the hosts. Sri Lanka-led by Angelo Mathews play their first match this season.

Mathews, who has been out of international cricket since January, underwent a fitness test on Friday afternoon and he will be assessed again before Saturday’s clash at the Oval. Earlier this week, a Sri Lanka Cricket statement said: “Mathews had complained of stiffness and pain, prompting the team management to conduct radiographic investigations, which revealed a strain on the muscle. “He will engage in supervised recovery over the next few days but will most likely sit out the first group stage match.”

Beaten 5-0 by the Proteas earlier in the year, Sri Lanka start the match as underdogs and in need big performances from the likes of pacemen Lasith Malinga and all-rounder Thisara Perera. South Africa have leg-spinner Imran Tahir and David Miller fit for the contest and captain AB de Villiers believes his side is ready to peak after the 2-1 series defeat to England. Highlights of the third ODI between England and South Africa at Lord’s.

“Sri Lanka always play well in these tournaments,” said De Villiers. “We’re well aware of that, and they deserve our respect. They have a lot of match-winners on their team. “So it’s so much more important for us to make sure we don’t think about what happened in the last series and we focus on tomorrow’s game.” Slow left-armer Keshav Maharaj deputised for Tahir during the England series but will be understudy once more against Sri Lanka.

“Imran is fit, and he’s our number one spin bowler,” said De Villiers. “Keshav understands his role when it comes to that. “There might be a time in the tournament where we might use a different strategy, if we play against a certain opposition or on a certain field. But for tomorrow, Imran is the number one pick. “He is fit and ready to go, so you should see his name on the team sheet.” South Africa finished their series against England with a seven-wicket win at Lord’s, having ensured every member of their Champions Trophy squad was involved at some stage in the three matches.

“As difficult as it is for me to say, that was definitely a warm-up for us,” said De Villiers. “I hate to say that – because I hate losing games of cricket. “It was a bit of a catch 22 to get that right message across to the boys, (and) it was maybe a bit confusing at times. “But if you do go into a series thinking that you want to play all 15 players, you’re not really focusing on just winning that series – because your mind is a little bit elsewhere. I think that’s what happened.

“We actually could have won that series, easily – which is a great boost of confidence for us – keeping in mind that we played 15 players, and it was a bit of a warm-up for the Champions Trophy.”

State of Origin 2017: Date, Start Time, Live Stream for Blues vs. Maroons Game 1,2,3

One of the biggest rivalries in rugby begins anew on Wednesday as the Queensland Maroons prepare to face New South Wales Blues in the opening match of this year’s State of Origin series.

The first of three fixtures between the two powerhouses of rugby league promises to be a barnburner—as is always the case in this series—and Queensland are chasing a third consecutive title in 2017.

This year’s head-to-head kicks off at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium before a three-week respite until Game 2 at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on June 21, with the final meeting scheduled to take place back in Brisbane on July 12.

Two of the last three State of Origin series have been decided after the first two matches, however, and both teams will be jostling to get that all-important tilt towards victory in Game 1 on Wednesday.

Here, we provide a look at all the essential match details to ensure you don’t miss out on the action, complete with live-stream information and a preview of the midweek opener in Brisbane.

One of the biggest discussion points leading into this year’s three-parter was the news that 10-time State Of Origin winner Johnathan Thurston would play no part in the first match of the series due to a shoulder injury.

This will be the first time in his career that Thurston will fail to feature in all three games of an Origin series—provided he recovers for Games 2 and 3—giving New South Wales hope in their efforts to breaks the Maroons’ current streak.

The Pittsburgh Penguins represent the former, with four Stanley Cups in their history—including the most recent—the second-seeded team in this year’s playoffs and featuring the great Sidney Crosby.

The latter are the Nashville Predators—an eighth-seed upstart—a franchise that’s only existed since 1998 and hails from a rather non-traditional hockey town but has nevertheless proved itself to be an undeniable force in these playoffs.

The Penguins have clearly been here before, while the Predators are newcomers to anything beyond the second round of the playoffs. They make for a great contrast in competition, and the finals should be an entertaining affair as a result.

Where: PPG Paint Arena in Pittsburgh
TV: NBC

Odds: Nashville 29-20, Pittsburgh 20-33

The Predators have likely stolen many hearts during their run to the finals. They knocked off the Chicago Blackhawks, St. Louis Blues and Anaheim Ducks to reach this point, losing just four times in the process. Their exuberant fans turned the home ice into a yellow fortress, unleashing deafening roars on seemingly every Predators goal.

Winger Filip Forsberg leads Nashville with eight goals and 15 points. Defenseman P.K. Subban, a former Norris Trophy winner, has also contributed 10 points in the playoffs and will work with Nashville’s excellent cadre of blueliners to stymie Pittsburgh’s offense and prevent them from getting shots on goaltender Pekka Rinne, who is having an excellent postseason.

The Finnish behemoth has been with the Preds since 2001, and he has stayed loyal to the club as he pursued his dream of reaching the championship.

“Every season my goal is to win the Stanley Cup, in all honesty. You come to training camp, you prepare yourself all summer, and now finally we are in this situation. I always felt that one day we would be in this situation,” Rinne said, per NBCSports.com’s Adam Gretz.

Rinne and his teammates will have it tough in the Final, especially when it comes to containing the Penguins’ attack.

Huddersfield and Reading meet in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Monday, with a Premier League place next season on offer to the winners. Town could name the same XI that started the second leg of their semi-final win over Sheffield Wednesday. Chelsea loanee Kasey Palmer (hamstring) may be a surprise squad inclusion after missing the past three months.

Reading will hope Jordan Obita (ankle) is available after missing the semi-final second leg against Fulham. Garath McCleary (hamstring) will push for a start after being on the bench in that 1-0 win. The two sides finished fifth and third respectively in the regular season and were separated by four points. Huddersfield are bidding to return to English football’s top flight for the first time since 1972, while if Jaap Stam’s side are victorious at Wembley, it would see them return to the Premier League after a four-season absence.

Huddersfield Town still have some very fresh memories of play-off triumphs, from both Wembley and Cardiff, but the Championship play-off final? It’s something we usually watch others do, en route to our half-term beach. This Wembley weekend has upgraded rapidly in fans’ minds, from a possible end-of-season-bonus to something that now should result in regular appearances on Match of The Day next season.

Reading are a respected opponent, similar to Huddersfield in their organisation and desire to keep the ball to themselves all day long, if at all possible. But as the only play-off participant to have been defeated by Huddersfield during the regular season, the Royals have been regarded throughout as more desirable than free-scoring Fulham or, until the semi-final, indomitable Sheffield Wednesday. After a season dominated by nail-biting victories (22 of Huddersfield’s 25 regular-season wins were by a single goal margin), it is so very Huddersfield to reach Wembley by a penalty shoot-out, and then mysteriously re-introduce cherished Chelsea loanee Kasey Palmer to the squad, during a post-semi-final warm weather training camp.

The thought of Chelsea’s borrowed flair-pair Izzy Brown and Palmer, plus a German leading scorer called Elias Kachunga, running free across Wembley in Huddersfield Town colours, will keep all Terriers fans awake with excitement until Monday. That image, like so many others from a breathtaking season, carry the same likely subtitle; it could be a while before Huddersfield Town fans see anything like this again.

Match facts

  • This will be the sixth meeting in all competitions between these sides since David Wagner took charge of Huddersfield in November 2015 – in the previous five both sides have claimed two victories each and shared a draw.
  • Reading are looking to secure promotion through the play-offs for the first time, having failed to make it through on each of the last five occasions (1995, 2001, 2003, 2009 and 2011).
  • Huddersfield are only the fourth English Football League club to reach the final of the play-offs in all three divisions after Blackpool, Preston and Swansea – only Blackpool have won all three.
  • The Royals have lost in each of their previous three play-off final appearances, while only Sheffield United have lost more (four).
  • The Terriers have been promoted from three of their four play-off finals, winning promotion in 1995, 2004 and 2012, with the latter two coming in penalty shootouts after goalless draws. The exception was a 3-0 defeat by Peterborough in 2011 in League One.
  • The Terriers will also be the first team in Football League history to have won promotion having conceded more goals than they have scored in the league campaign.

The biggest day in American open-wheel racing is nearly here, with the Indianapolis 500 running on Sunday. The race features some of the best driving talent in the world, including pole-sitter and four-time IndyCar champion, Scott Dixon, as well as IndyCar “rookie” Fernando Alonso, a two-time Formula 1 world champion. Television coverage of the Indy 500 will be carried by ABC and will begin with pre-race coverage at 11 a.m. ET. Proper race coverage begins at 12 p.m., and the green flag is set for approximately 12:17 p.m. Finally, the race can be streamed live online via WatchESPN on PC or various connected smart devices.

Alonso is impressing big time in his first time driving in IndyCar, qualifying in fifth place on the grid in the second row. He finished ahead of a ton of extremely talented drivers like Juan Pablo Montoya, Helio Castroneves and others. Widely considered to be one of the best drivers in the world in any discipline, Alonso is taking a break from the engine trouble suffered by McLaren-Honda, his Formula 1 team, by fulfilling his goal of racing in the Indianapolis 500.

Dixon qualified fastest with an average speed of 232.164 mph, the fastest time since the course record of 236.986 was set in 1996. Dixon won the Indy 500 from pole in 2008 and finished fourth from pole in 2015. Pole hasn’t been a huge factor in determining a winner in recent years, however. Alexander Rossi, the defending champion, started from 11th in 2016. He qualified in third on the grid, while Ed Carpenter split him and Dixon with a second place start. The second row includes Takuma Sato, Alonso, and JR Hildebrand.

Alonso is one of the favorites to win the race despite being a “rookie.” He has as much or more experience than anybody else in the field when it comes to open-wheel racing, and he’s likely well used to the car by this point. This year’s race is the 101st running of the 500, so things will probably be quite a bit less festive than 2016, the 100-year anniversary of the race. Still, around 300,000 people are expected to attend the race.

Above is all you need to know to watch Sunday’s action, and below that is the full starting grid for the action.
