The Boston Celtics know nobody expects them to make the NBA Finals. Their Eastern Conference finals opponents are the defending-champion Cleveland Cavaliers, led by LeBron James, who haven’t played in more than a week and haven’t lost in more than a month. The Cavaliers paced themselves through the regular season and have found another gear in the playoffs. The Celtics earned the No. 1 seed, in large part, because they always play hard and coach Brad Stevens looks to exploit every possible edge.

Boston would take more than one game. It is a massive underdog despite owning home-court advantage, and the last time these two played, Cleveland was down a starter and won 114-91.

For the second straight postseason, the Cavaliers have stormed through the East with incredible shooting. Last year, they shot 77 of 152 from deep in four games against the Atlanta Hawks. This time, they shot 61 of 131 in four games against Toronto. While these numbers seem unsustainable, they are no fluke. Cleveland is an even better shooting team on paper this season because of the addition of Kyle Korver, and James has shot 46.8 percent from deep in the playoffs.

If the Cavs shoot like that, they are almost unbeatable. It’s hard for most teams to even generate the number of 3-pointers they do, let alone make them at a similar clip. But Boston is not ordinary in this respect. It has attempted 34.9 3-pointers per game during the playoffs — even more than Cleveland — and made 37.4 percent, 40.9 percent vs. Washington.

The Celtics are going to have a tough time closing out to the Cavs’ sharpshooters, just like everybody else. If they are to have a chance, they need to make Cleveland do the same thing. Stevens will make sure the floor is spaced, but the players still have to knock the shots down. It would help if Al Horford continued to make 58.3 percent of his 3s, as he did in the first two rounds.

Boston has to make the Cavaliers look like the poor defensive team they were most of the season. This is best accomplished by involving Irving and Kevin Love in as many pick-and-rolls as possible. Thomas and Horford have great chemistry running the high pick-and-roll, and they’re usually surrounded by shooters so they can do this in space. If the Cavs elect to send multiple defenders at Thomas, then the Celtics must move the ball and use that strategy against them.

It’s not just about targeting Love and, say, Channing Frye. Even though Tristan Thompson is good at switching onto smaller players, drawing him away from the basket can create scoring opportunities inside. Boston needs to force Cleveland to continually make decisions, and the best way to do that is to keep the ball moving. No team in the playoffs averages more passes, assists or potential assists, per NBA.com’s SportVU statistics.

The Cavs were the worst team in the league in the regular season when it came to transition defense, and while they’ve been much better during the playoffs, Boston stilll should try to exploit it. The Celtics don’t force a ton of turnovers, but think about the energy and desperation they showed in Game 5 against the Wizards. They need more of that; if there are opportunities to push the pace and get easy baskets, they have to take advantage of them.

The top two teams in the Eastern Conference meet when the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers square off for conference supremacy and a spot in the NBA Finals.

Boston advanced to the Eastern Conference finals after defeating the Washington Wizards in seven games, following a 4-2 first-round ousting of the Chicago Bulls.

Cleveland, the defending conference and NBA champs, have been patiently awaiting their opponent after sweeping the Indiana Pacers and Toronto Raptors in the first and second rounds.

The Cavaliers took the regular-season series 3-1 over the Celtics.

Game 1 of the 2017 Western Conference Finals: the Golden State Warriors vs San Antonio Spurs will be on Sunday. The Sunday night matchup will be the Game 1 of a series many of National Basketball Association (NBA) spectators have been waiting for. Not since the 2013 Western Conference Semifinals have the Golden State Warriors and the San Antonio Spurs met in the NBA Playoffs. San Antonio advanced and ultimately reached the NBA Finals that year

The Golden State Warriors has reached the Western Conference Finals for the third consecutive postseason. Like the defending NBA champions Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference, the former have completed a couple of quite clean sweeps this 2017 NBA Playoffs to reach the Conference Finals untouchable. The Warriors outscored the Portland Trail Blazers in round one and edged out the Utah Jazz in Western Conference Semifinals.

As for the San Antonio Spurs, it has not been as easy to advance to the Western Conference Finals as the Golden State. The Spurs badly needed six games to get past pair of Southwest Division nemesis: the Memphis Grizzlies in the Quarterfinals and the Houston Rockets in the second-rounder.

The Spurs absolutely enters the Western Conference Finals to a new best-of-seven series clash. Only spurs shooting guard Danny Green and power forward LaMarcus Aldridge have started all 12 games this playoffs. Expect the duo to start again in Game 1 in Oakland against the Warriors.

With the superstar basketballer Tony Parker out for the rest of the playoffs, the Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has decided to utilize either rookie Dejounte Murray or veteran Patty Mills. Since the Warriors is exceedingly gifted at point guard with superstar Stephen Curry.

Curry scored 40 points and hit a tying 3-pointer with 1:48 remaining, and the Warriors rallied from way behind afterKawhi Leonard was lost to an ankle injury to beat the San Antonio Spurs 113-111 on Sunday in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals.

“It’s the playoffs. You’ve got to expect everything,” Curry said. “I wouldn’t call it smooth sailing at all. We’ve actually had to execute and get to this point. They came out and challenged us heavy, put a nice little run together. It took us a minute to figure it out to get up to that game speed after this little break. It’s definitely a nice way to win Game 1. We’ve got to capitalize off that and start Game 2 a lot better.”

Draymond Green gave Golden State the lead for good on a three-point play after the Warriors trailed by as many as 25 points.

Leonard left in the third quarter after he re-injured his left ankle, and the Warriors capitalized with an 18-0 run.

Durant scored 10 straight points during a key fourth-quarter stretch on the way to 34 points, while Zaza Pachulia had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Leonard had 26 points and eight rebounds. LaMarcus Aldridge produced another clutch playoff performance with 28 points and eight boards.

The two teams with the best regular-season records in the NBA have tipped off in a meeting to decide the best team in the Western Conference when the Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs face off for Game 1 of the conference finals on Sunday.

The Warriors are making their third consecutive trip to Western Conference finals, while the Spurs are back for the first time since winning it all in 2014.

Grizzlies vs. Spurs 2017 live stream: Start time, TV schedule, and how to watch Game 2 online

The San Antonio Spurs clicked on all cylinders in their 111-82 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 1. Memphis could get over its painful Game 1 defeat by beating the Spurs in Game 2 at AT&T Center tonight at 9:30 p.m ET on TNT.

In the early stages of Game 1, the Grizzlies couldn’t miss their shots. When the Spurs took their second timeout in the first quarter, Memphis was ahead, 22-9. However, in classic Spurs fashion, they made adjustments and began playing like a well-oiled machine from there.

In fact, San Antonio took its first lead with 8:53 left in the second quarter. The Spurs held a 52-49 lead at halftime and never looked back. With a 74-64 lead late in the third quarter, the Spurs went on a 19-0 run that ended with under nine minutes left in the fourth quarter. San Antonio outscored Memphis by 34 points in the final three quarters.

Kawhi Leonard finished the game with 32 points, and LaMarcus Aldridge finished with 20. Leonard connected on 11 of his 14 attempts from the field and kept knocking down contested shots. He also used his speed and strength to drive to the hoop for high percentage shots.

Memphis center Marc Gasol couldn’t miss earlier on, as he made his first three attempts from the field. He showed his range by hitting a three-pointer to give the Grizzlies a 5-0 lead early in the first quarter. Gasol scored 32 points but only chipped in seven in the second half. Mike Conley had 13 points, but he didn’t score after the second quarter.

Indeed, Memphis has to put Game 1 in the rear-view mirror and play better against the Spurs in Game 2. If the Grizzlies want to tie the series, other players must step up. Gasol shouldn’t have to shoulder the scoring load alone. Zach Randolph and JaMychal Green combined for nine points. That’s can’t happen again.

After an exciting Game 1 that ended with 109-108 Cleveland Cavaliers victory, the Indiana Pacers will look to answer back in Game 2 at Quicken Loans Arena on TNT.

Cleveland once led by 10 in the fourth quarter, but Indiana battled back. Indiana’s Paul George and Lance Stephenson kept the Pacers competitive by knocking down contested shots. In fact, Pacers point guard Jeff Teague knocked down a three-pointer to give the Pacers a 105-103 lead with a little over three minutes remaining in the game.

Cleveland later regained the lead, 109-105, with over a minute remaining. With 45 seconds left, J.R. Smith committed a turnover, and Indiana had a chance to go for a two-for-one opportunity. So, Indiana inbounded the ball, and George connected from beyond the arc to slice the Cavaliers’ lead to 109-108.

After George’s big-time shot, LeBron James tried to answer back with a three-pointer of his own but missed with 20 seconds left. Stephenson corralled the rebound, giving his team a chance to win the game with one last shot.

Indeed, George is the Pacers’ go-to option to score points, so the team decided to let him attempt the last shot. But Cleveland had other plans. Instead of letting George shoot the ball, the Cavaliers double-teamed him, forcing him to pass the ball to guard C.J. Miles to attempt the game-winning shot. Unfortunately for Indiana, Miles missed the jump shot, and Cleveland took a 1-0 lead in the seven-game series.

James scored a game-high 32 points and snagged six rebounds to go along with 13 assists. Kyrie Irving chipped in with 23 points. For Indiana, George racked up 29 points, and Stephenson added 16.

Game 2 should be an exciting game between these two teams. The Cavaliers have to do a better job of converting free throws. They shot 51.9 percent from the charity stripe in Game 1. As for the Pacers, they need to stop committing turnovers. They turned over the ball 13 times, and Cleveland scored 19 points off those turnovers.

Game 2 should leave you on the edge of your seat. Both teams can score at ease. But this game may come down to who can hit the big-time shots.

The NBA playoffs continue on Sunday with a highly-anticipated matchup between the Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder featuring leading MVP candidates Russell Westbrook and James Harden.

When: 6 p.m. PT/9 p.m. ET, Sunday, April 16
Where: Toyota Center, Houston, Tex.

Regular season series: Rockets won 3-1

The first game of the first round series between the Houston Rockets and the OKC Thunder starts on Sunday when the Thunder make their way to Houston to kick off the action.

The Thunder are a shell of the team they were a season ago led by Kevin Durant, who bolted for the Warriors before the season. But behind their fearless leader and triple-double machine Russell Westbrook, they have a puncher’s chance at an upset in the first round.

Highlights: Let’s talk about the MVP battle. This might be the most debated MVP race in years between Russell Westbrook and James Harden and even Kawhi Leonard, so of course the NBA gods have gifted us this matchup in the first round. It’s triple-Russell vs. the uber-efficient Harden, the latter of which boasts a better team. But the former might be the most capable of completely taking over games.

I don’t know who will win the series. And sadly, neither will likely guard one another. But I don’t care, and neither should you. This will be grab-your-popcorn-and-sit-on-the-couch appointment viewing.

The time has finally come for the Golden State Warriors to begin their path to redemption. After the heartbreak of the NBA Finals last season, the Warriors will begin their road to becoming 2016-17 NBA Champions on Sunday. Up first is the always tough Portland Trail Blazers.

These two teams met in the Western Conference Semifinals in the previous playoffs and they tend to create some memorable moments. Regular season aside, Golden State knows they will have a fight on their hands.

The No. 8 Portland Trail Blazers (41-41) visit the No. 1 Golden State Warriors (67-15) in Game 1 of their first-round Western Conference playoff series Sunday at Oracle Arena.

What: Blazers at Warriors, 12:30 p.m.
TV channel: ESPN (Comcast/Xfinity channel 35, or 735 for HD) and KGW (Comcast/Xfinity channel 8, or 708 for HD)
Online: NBA League Pass is blacked out for nationally televised games.
Listen: Radio on KPOJ 620 AM in Portland area.

About the Warriors: Golden State just wrapped up one the best offensive seasons in league history, matching the 1987-88 Los Angeles Lakers for the highest offensive rating in NBA history, according to Basketball-Reference.

The Warriors were first in the league in field goal percentage (49.5), assists (30.4) and fastbreak points (22.6). They hit at least 10 three-pointers in 60 of their 82 games and topped in the 40-point mark in 19 quarters.

On top of the historically dominant offense, the Warriors had the second best defensive rating in the league this season. They led the league in steals (9.6), blocks (6.8) and points off turnovers (19.3).

The addition of Kevin Durant in free agency has transformed the Warriors from historically good to historically good with Kevin Durant. No team has won more regular season games (207) in a three-year stretch than the Warriors, who are also the first team in league history to win at least 65 games in three consecutive seasons.

Durant shot a career best from the floor while averaging career-highs in blocks and rebounds as defensive force in the Warriors vaunted small ball “Death Lineup.” With Draymond Green anchoring Golden State on defense, Durant, Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry formed one of the most potent trios in the league.

The Warriors are 16-1 when Durant, Curry and Thompson each scored 20 or more points in the same game and 3-0 when they each scored 25 points or more. Golden State went 32-5 when Durant, Curry and Thompson scored a combined 70 points or more.

About the Blazers: The biggest question facing Portland heading into the postseason is whether or not center Jusuf Nurkic will play in Game 1. And the Blazers official injury report provided little clarity. Nurkic is listed as questionable for Game 1 with a final decision likely coming just before tip-off.

It’s been 17 days since Nurkic suffered a non-displaced fibular fracture in his right leg, an injury that prevented him from playing in the Blazers’ final seven games of the regular season. If he plays, he offers perhaps the Blazers’ biggest advantage, giving them a 7-foot, 280-pound two-way force who helped resurrect the season by averaging 15.2 points, 10.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.9 blocks in 20 games.

Portland was 16-4 with Nurkic in the lineup. His arrival and Damian Lillard’s post-All-Star break surge helped push the Blazers season from lottery-bound disappointment to the final playoff spot in the West.

The Blazers ended the season with 11th ranked offense, scoring 107.8 points per 100 possessions, and the 21st ranked defense, allowing 107.8 point per 100 possessions. Impressive statistical symmetry, fitting for a team that finished 41-41.

Lillard averaged 23.3 points on 45.8 percent shooting and 38.9 percent shooting from three-point range, 3.7 assists in three games against the Warriors this season. CJ McCollum averaged 22.3 points on 47.9 percent shooting and 40.7 shooting from beyond arc, 5.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists in four games Golden State.

The Blazers are 2-11 against the Warriors over the past two seasons, including the second round playoff series last season, which Golden State won in five games.

Injuries: For the Blazers, Ed Davis (torn labrum, left shoulder) and Festus Ezeli (left knee rehab) are out, Jusuf Nurkic (fibular fracture, right leg) and Tim Quarterman (concussion) are questionable and Allen Crabbe (sore left foot) is probable. For Golden State, Matt Barnes (right ankle sprain) is out.
