The Pittsburgh Penguins represent the former, with four Stanley Cups in their history—including the most recent—the second-seeded team in this year’s playoffs and featuring the great Sidney Crosby.

The latter are the Nashville Predators—an eighth-seed upstart—a franchise that’s only existed since 1998 and hails from a rather non-traditional hockey town but has nevertheless proved itself to be an undeniable force in these playoffs.

The Penguins have clearly been here before, while the Predators are newcomers to anything beyond the second round of the playoffs. They make for a great contrast in competition, and the finals should be an entertaining affair as a result.

TV: NBC

Odds: Nashville 29-20, Pittsburgh 20-33

The Predators have likely stolen many hearts during their run to the finals. They knocked off the Chicago Blackhawks, St. Louis Blues and Anaheim Ducks to reach this point, losing just four times in the process. Their exuberant fans turned the home ice into a yellow fortress, unleashing deafening roars on seemingly every Predators goal.

Winger Filip Forsberg leads Nashville with eight goals and 15 points. Defenseman P.K. Subban, a former Norris Trophy winner, has also contributed 10 points in the playoffs and will work with Nashville’s excellent cadre of blueliners to stymie Pittsburgh’s offense and prevent them from getting shots on goaltender Pekka Rinne, who is having an excellent postseason.

The Finnish behemoth has been with the Preds since 2001, and he has stayed loyal to the club as he pursued his dream of reaching the championship.

“Every season my goal is to win the Stanley Cup, in all honesty. You come to training camp, you prepare yourself all summer, and now finally we are in this situation. I always felt that one day we would be in this situation,” Rinne said, per NBCSports.com’s Adam Gretz.

Rinne and his teammates will have it tough in the Final, especially when it comes to containing the Penguins’ attack.

Injured San Jose Sharks forward Joe Thornton is listed as a game-time decision Sunday night before his team takes on the Edmonton Oilers in Game 3 of their first-round playoff series at the SAP Center.

Thornton has yet to play a game in the 2017 post-season for San Jose, suffering a lower-body injury on April 2 against the Vancouver Canucks.

If he’s able to go, the 37-year-old would be a welcome addition to a Sharks team that managed to steal home ice in their series with the Oilers in Game 1, but got shutout in Game 2.

Thornton amassed seven goals and 43 assists in 79 games played for San Jose this season.

The Rangers play Game 3 of their Eastern Conference First Round series against the Montreal Canadiens tomorrow, Apr. 16, at Madison Square Garden (7:00 p.m. ET – TV: MSG Network; Radio: ESPN 98.7 FM). The best-of-seven series is tied at one game apiece, following Montreal’s 4-3 win in overtime in Game 2 at Bell Centre.

The Rangers are facing the Canadiens in a playoff series for the 16th time in franchise history. New York has won eight of 15 all-time playoff series against Montreal. The Blueshirts have played more playoff series and have won more playoff series against Montreal than against any other NHL opponent in franchise history. The two teams are meeting in a playoff series for the first time since the Eastern Conference Final in 2014, when the Rangers defeated the Canadiens, four games to two.

Canadiens coach Claude Julien will make a couple of lineup changes for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference quarter-final series against the New York Rangers Sunday night at Madison Square Garden (7 p.m., Sportsnet, TVA Sports, TSN Radio 690).

Returning to the fourth line will be Torrey Mitchell, taking Andreas Martinsen’s spot on right wing, while on defence Brandon Davidson will replace Nikita Nesterov.

The series is tied 1-1 after the Rangers won the first game 2-0 and the Canadiens won Game 2 in overtime, 4-3. Both games were at the Bell Centre.

“First of all, I don’t know that we’re going with hard pairings,” coach Claude Julien said about his defencemen after the team’s morning skate Sunday at MSG. “We haven’t done that now for the last few games here. We’ve kind of mixed and matched, which we probably will continue to do. But having (Davidson) in the lineup I think he’s a hungry young player that has played well for us. The fact that I have some options, I’m certainly going to use them.”

Nesterov and Nathan Beaulieu had a tough time while paired together in Game 2. Beaulieu finished the game minus-3, while Nesterov was limited to 13:05 of ice time. As a result, Andrei Markov (33:37), Shea Weber (32:21) and Jeff Petry (31:37) all logged more than 30 minutes of ice time.

“As you can see, we split them up,” Julien said about the Nesterov-Beaulieu pairing when the coach met with the media Saturday afternoon at the team’s Manhattan hotel. “There was a couple of situations there again that wasn’t probably favourable, but we ended up playing everybody. But we split them up and played them with different guys.”

There will be more mixing and matching in Game 3, but this time it will be with Davidson in lineup.

“I’m pretty excited,” said Davidson, who found out he would be in the lineup Saturday night. “There’s a lot of emotion that goes behind these games, there’s a lot of importance. I think I got to see that from above and now it’s time to go to work. I think I’m ready, I’m excited. I want to bring some energy here, some fresh legs. Make sure I’m doing my part. Really excited to get involved.”

The Pittsburgh Penguins will look to take a 3-0 series lead over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday when the two face off in game three of their first round match-up.

After a sudden injury to goaltender Matt Murray prior to game one of the series, goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury had to come in cold for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Nevertheless, the Penguins were able to hold the Blue Jackets to only one goal with a 3-1 victory in the first game of the series.

Going into game two hot, the Penguins had another successful night on Friday. Backed by captain Sidney Crosby’s three-point night, the Penguins easily took a 4-1 win against the Blue Jackets to take a 2-0 lead.

The Penguins will have to come in hot in game three right off the bat. They will be looking to convert on the defensive holes they have been able to find on Columbus in games one and two. They shouldn’t forget that Sergei Bobrovsky is a very good goalie, but they should keep in mind that their offence is clicking right now.
Matt Calvert Suspended One Game

One big highlight from Friday’s game two was the vicious cross-check that Columbus forward Matt Calvert laid on Penguins forward Tom Kuhnhackl.

Calvert crossed-checked Kuhnhackl in his upper-back, breaking his own at the same time. Calvert then delivered another cheap check, taking Kuhnhackl down to the ice while he was recovering from the cross-check.

The Minnesota Wild have a lot of ground to make up.

After failing to split their home half of the series against the Blues, they fell into a two-game hole with a pair of games in St. Louis on the horizon. Now, Sunday is essentially a must-win game for the Wild or they’ll fall to a three-game deficit with their Stanley Cup hopes on the line.

First, they’ll need to best Jake Allen, who is by far the MVP of this series thus far. The Blues starter has allowed two goals on 78 shots through the first two games, an incredible feat considering Allen’s struggles earlier in the year.

In a series brimming with offensive talent, the story has so far been Allen’s play. The Blues have won both games by scores of 2-1 and the major offensive players on both sides have been mostly silent.

Not only will the Wild have to learn to beat Allen, and quickly, they’ll have to do it on the road.
